What are the most common causes of paralysis?

The most common cause of paralysis is stroke, but other causes include trauma to the head or the spine. Spinal cord injuries are particularly likely to result in paralysis. The spinal cord is responsible for transporting nerve signals from the brain to other parts of the body spinal cord injuries disrupt the cord’s ability to transmit signals, thereby causing paralysis below the level of injury. Head injuries that cause damage to the areas of the brain responsible for controlling movement can also cause paralysis. Common causes of head and spinal injury include road traffic accidents, sports injuries, assaults and accidents at work. Regardless of what kind of accident you were involved in, if your paralysis was due to another person’s negligence or incompetence, you are entitled to make a claim.

What are the main types of paralysis?

There are four main types of paralysis. They are:

  • Monoplegia: Monoplegia is a type of paralysis that only affects one limb. It usually affects arms and is typically the result of a neurological illness or damage to a part of the brain responsible for controlling movement.
  • Hemiplegia: Hemiplegia is paralysis of one half of the body. It is particularly common in stroke victims and typically affects the arm and leg of either the left or right side of the body. This type of paralysis can be temporary.
  • Paraplegia: Paraplegia is paralysis in the legs and the pelvis; it is usually the result of an injury to the spinal cord in the lower back. Patients with paraplegia may continue to feel pain and other sensation in the legs if the injury that caused the paralysis was incomplete. Incomplete paralysis occurs when some nerve signals are able to get past the level of injury and reach the intended limbs.
  • Quadriplegia: Quadriplegia is the most severe form of paralysis. It is caused by injury to the spinal cord in the neck. Paralysis occurs when nerve signals from the brain are unable to travel along the spine; because the injuries sustained by quadriplegics are located so high up, nerve signals aren’t able to get to the arms and legs, resulting in full paralysis. Like paraplegics, quadriplegics may continue to feel some sensations in their limbs if their spinal injury is incomplete.

Paralysis of one or more limbs severe disability that has the potential to seriously reduce a person’s quality of life. It was our first time we dealt with PDA law for our conveyancing. We were recommended to them by the Property agency. We are glad we had a good experience with PDA law, especially during lockdowns and Christmas period. They made sure, they had all the paper-work in place with all searches done in time. They provided us with realistic timescales, so that there is no disappointment towards the end. Looking forward to deal with them in the near future.
